Teesside packaging expert on a mission to help firms cut their waste bill. With landfill taxes topping £50 a tonne, a green-minded Teessider is on a mission to help firms cut their waste bill. Jez Davison reports. PACKAGING expert Tim Hutchinson doesn’t buy into the Renew, Reuse, Recycle mantra espoused by a vast army of green campaigners.

LANDFILL TAX INCREASES AND THE NEW WASTE (ENGLAND AND WALES) REGULATIONS

On the 1st April landfill taxes increased from £48 per tonne to £56 per tonne.  With this price ever increasing it should motivate producers of waste to reduce the amount going to land fill and increase the amount thats being re-used and recycled.  This is where its imperitive the Waste Framework Directive should be implemented into the work place.  Packaging should be first reduced, then re-used where possible, recycled and finally energy from waste.Waste Heirarchy

Following on from lanfill tax increases, a new law was implemented on the 29th March 2011, The Waste (England and Wales) Regulations require every business in the UK to ensure they have applied the waste heirarchy to any waste they generate.  Attached is a copy of the waste heirarchy pyrimid which illustrates what is required of each business.  By 2013 if companies who normally carry controlled waste produced by their site, will need to register as a low tier carrier.  In January 2015 these Regulations will also oversee that seperate collection of waste paper, metal, plastic and glass are carried out from every business and should not be mixed up when generated.

Outpace have been interviewed by The North East of England Process Industry Cluster (NEPIC) about how they have successfully helped B&Q move away from single use corrugated packaging to a variation of Carrierpac, called ‘Longspac’.

Following on from 2008 when B&Q formally adopted the multi-trip Carrierpac for delivering their kitchen worktops, we are delighted to announce that B&Q have now switched more single use corrugated packaging to another version of Carrierpac called a 'Longspac'

B&Q's desire to replace single use packaging with a greener, cost effective and more sustainable multi-use packaging has resulted in the recent move to Longspacs.

The Governments own Waste Resource Action Program (WRAP) sponsored the Longspac trial which was project managed by Tim Hutchinson of Outpace and Kev Corby of CEVA Logistics. The full project report can be found at the following link.

http://www.wrap.org.uk/retail/case_studies_research/index.html

Since B&Q switched to Carrierpacs for kitchen worktops in Jan 2008 they have diverted over 4077 tonnes  of single use packaging from the waste stream. Around 15,000 Carrierpacs are in use at any one time in the supply chain with a running total of 1,359,086 trips (and counting). This has resulted in over 3,000 tonnes of carbon reduction and saved around 662 tonne of damaged worktops from becoming waste thanks to the excellent protection offered by Carrierpac. The overall savings to B&Q since 2008 has exceeded £3,000,000

With the addition of the 'Longspacs' this will boost these excellent statistics still further.

£2.35 MILLION SAVINGS GENERATED BY CARRIERPAC.

Latest statistics show that Carrierpac has reduced B&Q`s packaging and associated costs even further since the introduction of Carrierpac in January 2008, B&Q are £2.35 million better off thanks to the re-usable package. These savings are based on the reduction of single trip packaging, reduced re-delivery costs due to the number of kitchen worktops not being damaged during transit and savings on their UK Packaging waste costs. B&Q have also further reduced the amount of single trip packaging that potentially ends up in land fill by 2897 tonnes
