Delivering Value Beyond Packaging

'Tim Hutchinson recently returned from Toronto and Ottawa as part of a UK Trade and investment (UKTI) visit to the Ontario region of Canada. Tim had a meeting with one of the largest ' Home improvement warehouses' in Canada called Lowes plus other discussions with various kitchen manufacturers, trade associations and the Ministry of Environment. The 5 days of appointments were arranged by the British Consulate-Generals department for trade, they also organised a reception at the Consulate Generals house for all British attendees and various other guests.
Most meetings were arranged to discuss the Carrierpac and Longspac multi-trip packaging concept. The Ministry of Environment were keen to discuss the proposed producer responsibility Regulations that are currently going through the 'discussion phase' in Canada. Including in this document are very similar proposals to the UK Packaging Waste Regulations that Outpace have a great deal of experience with and have been involved with since they became UK law in 1997.
Overall the visit proved very interesting with some excellent contacts made and a good appreciation of the Canadian DIY and kitchen market. Very much linked was the countries intension to bring in Regulation to encourage reuse, reduction and recycling of packaging, this alone will be a key driver for companies to switch from single trip packaging to multi trip packaging such as Carrierpac and Longspac.
Outpace were recently invited to review and prepare the 2009 packaging waste obligation of aerospace coatings specialist PPG Shildon. Following a detailed assessment of key packaging activities Outpace identified several opportunities to reduce PPG's declaration. The review identified a 25% reduction in obligated waste to deliver a measureable and distinctive saving on the cost of compliance.
diyweek.org report on WRAP and B&Q testing

Following an audit during late 2008 Outpace has been selected by coatings specialists PPG Shildon to prepare the necessary 2009 packaging waste data to ensure the Business achieves full regulatory compliance at least cost. The audit identified a number of opportunities for PPG to lower their overall waste obligation and along with that reduction measurable cost savings.
Following an Outpace packaging waste audit in 2008 the fragrance and flavouring specialists Givaudan have agreed to the formal collection of discarded and damaged pallets from their Ashford site. The intention is to recover, inspect and repair any damaged Givaudan pallets for return and re-use. The re-use approach will help lower Givaudans' wood waste obligation during 2009 with the added benefit of reduced new pallet spend.
During a recent packaging waste audit Outpace identified an opportunity for chemical intermediates specialists Novartis Grimsby to have a number of their pallets, used for the transfer of by-products to UK waste treatment plants, recovered for re-use. The recovery approach will reduce annual new pallet requirements by an estimated 5000 units.
Carrierpac now have Croydon based Assa Abloy on board to complete trials to see what efficiencies are achieved when transporting their various door systems in Carrierpacs to their customers. This will be a valid exercise to show the capabilities of the Carrierpac to Assa Abloy and also reassurance for Carrierpac that it can be adapted to carry a variety of products not just kitchen worktops. We will keep you posted with any progress.

Closing the loop
Jill Park, Packaging News, 03 July 2008
The days of children playing in a large empty corrugated box could be over if the Waste and Resources Action Programme (Wrap) has anything to do with it. Since 2005, it has worked with a number of retailers, including B&Q and Argos..... <Full details>
Packaging consultants Outpace worked with WRAP and B&Q to develop an innovative multi-trip pack. Made from PP and containing about 45% recycled content, the Carrierpacs are recyclable at the end of their lives. Featuring carry handles and secured by Velcro fasteners along the length of the pack consumers get quick and secure access to the worktop. The packs are manufactured by Storsack and Kaysersberg Plastics. Kayserbergs black Correx sheets are made from 100% reprocessed polypropylene and Storsack supplies the woven polypropylene outers and assembles the two-piece Carrierpac for delivery to B&Q.

Background Information
An initial 700 Carrierpacs were used in the WRAP sponsored trial and were uniquely numbered to enable careful monitoring.
B&Q demanded that the concept was economically viable compared with single trip packaging. Among the stringent business requirements were: the relative purchase cost of single-trip packaging versus Carrierpac; loss rate of Carrierpacs per delivery cycle and the number of reuses that could be achieved.
Now in use, product damage has reduced from 6% to 1%, while packaging costs are calculated to reduce by more than £300,000 a year. Carrierpacs are estimated to prevent 1,100 tonnes per year of cardboard entering the waste stream. If all manufacturers and retailers of kitchens used Carrierpacs it could reduce packaging by 5000 tonnes annually.
The multiple use pack significantly reduces packaging waste and transport costs. Product damage has been significantly reduced since the introduction of this pack resulting in less waste throughout the supply chain.
Its robustness was tested during a trial that involved two logistics contractors (TNT and Christian Salvesen). The B&Q Worktop Carrierpac was considered by the judges to be an excellent example of a pack that enhances the protection of the product, improves ease of handling and provides a substantial reduction in product damage and packaging wastage.
